Nevermore

2014-Jul.

“Nevermore” is an immersive art installation that combines kinetic art with mechanical design to explore the existential struggle of finding personal meaning amidst the repetitive demands of modern life. Drawing inspiration from the myth of Sisyphus and Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven,” particularly the refrain “nevermore,” the piece features a sophisticated robotic arm system that continuously pushes a sphere made of pyrite and inscribed with personal goals up an inclined plane. Despite the robotic arm’s precise and repetitive movements, each attempt yields different results, with the sphere often deviating from its path and requiring external intervention to keep moving.

This evokes the eternal struggle depicted in the Sisyphus myth, highlighting the tension between human will and relentless technological forces. Through direct interaction with the installation, viewers experience this endless cycle, confronting the cold precision of mechanization and the unyielding roll of the stone. “Nevermore” serves as a poignant metaphor for the potential dehumanization and loss of individuality in an increasingly automated world.
